exp_{week} (3rd Day)

No trouble but troublesome.
Megohmmeter is suffering bad connection or a serious health problem. An examination is to be done.

-------
14:50 Then the trouble came
Lesson:
If the damage is small (say less than 500), just close shutter and take time to fix.
If it is much more than 500, stop immediately and prepare to redo it.
Or try to make some interesting mutant out of the damaged material.

A software note

A lab friend told me about these 2 for 3D crystal structure drawing:

POV-ray

Ortep III
-------------------------
A nice site by accident:

2nd day of exp(week)

Everything seems to be fine except the cooling water which is leaking 1~2 drops /day. It's dangerous but not so terribly dangerous now, so we are going to fix it some time this week. Hope it will take place on Friday so that I can realy complete something this week.

The high voltage power source is doing ok though a little noisy because of micro thunder inside.

1st day of the experiment week

After a weekend's relax, cryopump is full of gas vapour that was once condensed on the metal plate during pumping process of the previous week. It needs a restart.

1. Restart cryogenic pump

1.0 Get rid of the gas inside of the Cryogenic pump by using roughening pump.

1.0.1. Before doing anything (that one may regret later) make sure that:

  • no contact between roughening pump and main chamber
  • no contact between roughening pump and outside
  • no contact between cryogenic pump and outside.
1.0.2 Connect roughening pump with Cryogenic pump make sure that the wire is connected and then turn the switch (that connect crogenic pump and roughening pump) on, there is a mechanic sound to confirm that the corresponding parts (inside) moved.

1.0.3 Turn on the roughening pump.
(It is a little better to turn on the roughening pump before turning on the switch, I feel)

1.1 Start the Cryogenic pump

When the pressure inside Cryogenic pump is about 70~100 mTorr.

1.1.1 Turn off the switch that that connect cryogenic pump and roughening pump, disconnect the wire of the switch from power, and turn off the roughening pump.

1.1.2 Turn on the cooling water for Cryo pump and then turn on the power of the Cryo pump. The temperature inside of Cryo will drop quickly from 293 K to 150 K within an hour (or 30 min, I forgot?).

2 hours later the temperature should stay at 8 K which is the working temperature of Cryo.

If the temperature didn't drop to 8k within 2 hours, the process of starting Cryo failed and one have to know the reason why it failed and prepare to start it the next day (wait a whole day for the condensed gas to vapor so that it's possible to be evacuated by roughening pump). The reason of failure is always that the 1.o process failed so that vacuum inside of Cryo was so bad that temperature can never drop to 8 K (too many gas molecules keep taking heat from the shell of cryo which is about the temperature of outside environment.)

A Book

Experience:
There is this book that I read about 10%  when some events interrupted and the reading was terminated.  I pick up this book today and found myself don't remember much!

Conclusion:
A book reading process must be carried out regularly and frequently for the brain to weave a really strong web of it or the memory will decrease (exponentially?) with time. A few pages a day or a week is not a bad solution as the brain can always recall something that happened last week which have some connection with something that happened longer ago.

Computation

I am beginning to study this. I searched internet for introductory materials and found a few links.

This page provide simple codes and nice links for beginners. "Education" link is also worth a check.

Interview tips

I found some interview tips today. Some are for high school graduates and undergraduate students, though

Funny Maybe?

New Toy

I have been long persuaded by an excellent lab mate to download Inkscape for the production of beautiful figures for presentations. Rebellious and stubborn of me, I didn't download it. Now with some motivation other than aiding research and presentation, I downloaded it to the school Mac and domestic Linux.
It could be pretty cool! Good new toy to "little drawings" !

Alpha III M2 profile

Warning: This is a note on "Clans of the Alphane Moon" by Philip K. Dick. It will contain some spoilers so do not read this post if you are planning to read this book.

Alpha III M2
People :
The Pares:

Paraniac schizophrenics. The paranoids. They are the statesman class on this moon. They think about defense and strategies systematicly and rationally all the time.
Residence: Adolfville.
Adolf Hitler was a paranoid.
The Manses
Manic-depressives. The manias. The highly creative and aggressive clan who develop spectacular and highly distructive weapons. They are the warrior class on the moon.
Residence: Da Vinci Heights
Da Vinci was a mania.
The Polies
The polymorphic schizophrenia simplex. Unpredictable and never grow up, they are the creative members of the society, producing the new ideas.
Residence: Hamlet Hamlet
The Heebs
The hebephrenics. They are inclined to ascetic saints or the labour class.
Residence: Gandhitown
Gandhi?
The Skitz
The simple schizophrenia. With their severe hallucination, The are the poet class, some become saints.
Residence:
The Ob-Coms
Obsessive-compulsive neurosis. Their ritualistic functionaries with no orignial ideas. Their conservatism will balance the radical quality of the Polymorphic schizophrenics and give the society stability.
Residence:
The Deps
The Depressive.
Residence: Cotten Mather Estates
The Norms
The normal, with no mental disease at all. New class on the moon consist of only 1 person.
Residence: Jeffersonburg
Jefferson was a normal person.

The Alphane clans are all mentally ill, however the society has all the elements so it works. It could be interesting to make a video game out of it. There are so many characteristic characters here.
It makes me think eigenvectors that compose a space. There are always more then one selection of eigenvectors.
Isn't it just a linear transform of everyone on Terran?
It appears everything wrong to the Terran people, but all together, this moon, with all kinds of mentally ill people, works well.

Frustrating voice mail experience

It was frustrating. To do better next time I collected some little information on how to do it. This one contains rules.

This one contains samples:

Next time before calling I should prepare for all kinds of cases.

A Hard Day

It was a hard day. I had to compose 2 different recommendation letters for myself from the perspectives of 2 different persons. I was shocked after knowing that I have to do all these by myself and I do not even know myself well enough! I soon learned that students in this country have to do this kind of thing some time because professors are highly engaged creatures. I had to do it myself, submit and leave them to the prof.s' final corrections.

It was a interesting journey indeed. After looking at a few samples online I started composing. On one hand I was drowning in good words that express the same meaning because I don't want the 2 prof.s to use the same expressions, on the other hand I found some other character that I wish to have as my own possession. In other words, I found something WANTING about myself. It was just the kind of experience that one of the prof.s told me "a good chance to think of oneself"

The ability to know oneself just by oneself turned out to be extremely important to a japanese person who is a part of the Japanese society because most Japanese people never say their opinions about you directly. You are suppose to "read the air" and figure it out all  by yourself. I will write a special post about "air-reading" some time, it is very interesting as a cultural phenomena that exists only in Japan.

Physics link (for myself)

Physics link to Gingrich in University of Alberta.
A collection of  physics courses not necessarily with notes. As a compensation to my own educational deficiency I always have to peek the education of others and sneak around on the internet.
What a shame for my excellent university! Soon it will be my Ex-university anyway!

New year

Aura of the holiday is fading, so the time that I spend in fantasy world should shrink. Fantasies reform from a visual one to a physics one.
new years goal
  • care more about reality, something that other people care about
  • do more exercises, physically, mentally, also more on communication skills
  • do more experiments
  • do more efforts intended for future easiness
  • get along well with experimental equipments
  • Insight Insight Insight
  • more creativity, humor and skills in "little drawings"
  • more friends from different viewing angles
  • launch myself somewhere
